Description

Sweet Chestnut is a durable, straight growth, dimensionally stable timber well suited to use in buildings. However, very little UK grown sweet chestnut is used in construction. The majority is converted into fencing or burnt as biomass. a plan submission proforma ( MS Word Document, 16.3 KB) if you’re receiving funding from the Countryside Stewardship scheme

The Tree Growth Project seeks to collect regular growth data to improve our understanding of the response of trees to changes in woodland management and climate change across the country. Volunteers take regular measurements using growth bands and upload the data via Forest Lab. Read our tree growth case study. Forest Lab is an application within myForest which provides technology and tools to help land managers share data to inform environmental science, and in return improve knowledge exchange between scientists and land managers. As part of this support and advice, the Focus Area Pilot is running a series of ten webinars to help woodland owners understand the benefits of managing woodland and how to progress management of their woodlands. Seven webinar titles were decided with the remaining three to be determined by attendees’ interests.

myForest is bringing the latest technology to people who manage and create our forests. myForest provides comprehensive online mapping, digital tools and the latest resources to sustainably manage, and create new forests around Britain. In Britain there is an estimated 700,000ha of under-managed woodlands. In addition, as one of Europe’s least forested countries, the UK needs to fulfil its potential in providing a meaningful contribution towards the country’s timber needs.

The UK Forestry Standard sets out the UK government’s approach to sustainable forestry and woodland management, including standards and requirements, regulations and monitoring, and reporting. It applies to all woodland and woodland operations, regardless of who owns or manages it. Why create a management plan? Following the devastating impacts of Storm Arwen, the second webinar 'An Introduction to Management Planning' was rearranged to allow us to answer queries regarding the impacts of Storm Arwen on woodland management along with guests from the Forestry Commission and Euro Forest. Further information on the remaining webinars can be found here: FREE Woods into Management Webinars – RDI Associates (ruraldevelopment.org.uk) Slide from webinar 1: Sustainable Woodland Management - how and why do woodlands benefit Forest Lab started as a simple idea; ‘wouldn’t it be good if myForest users could help researchers?’ This soon prompted a follow-up question; ‘how can researchers help myForest users with issues impacting their forests?’ This two-way exchange is the foundation of what has become Forest Lab.” How to set a file projection will vary depending on the software used to generate your compartment, sub-compartment, or feature mapping. For guidance on setting a file projection, please refer to guidance produced by the software provider. For more information on file projections please find more information below. There are several common issues users encounter when trying to import mapping into myForest, including:

Climate Risk Indicators is a free online tool to visualise UK climate change data, including average, minimum and maximum temperatures, rainfall, and temperature extremes. It provides indicators of risk including for wildfire, agriculture, river levels, and transport. Information and a How to Guide are included within the Tool and through the Climate Resilience Programme. A Forest Owner Account - for those who own or manage a single property which contains forested land (or land which they wish to use for forest creation); or Benefits to forest scientists are access to knowledge, information and data about many different woodlands. We are calling this project Forest Lab. Engagement Agreement The Wildfire Project aims to collect valuable information and data to help understand wildfire risk, which in turn will be used to assess and decrease wildfire risk for myForest users. Volunteers complete questionnaires and a wildlife fire risk assessment at regular intervals. Tree Growth ProjectThere are five levels from entry through to gold, as your score improves, you will move through these levels and eventually become Grown in Britain (GiB) audit ready. Forest Lab is built within myForest, a woodland creation and management platform designed and run by Sylva Foundation. Embedding Forest Lab within myForest means that all users of the platform can get involved simply, and they are able to share any data they want from their existing maps and plans. During 2021 we will be refining and retesting outputs with stakeholders beyond the Northern Forest in a second tree planting season. How you divide your compartment(s) into smaller, more manageable sub-compartments may vary depending on the forest size, location, and plan. How you design your sub-compartment layout is entirely up to you, however using ‘hard’ features (for example a river boundary, a Public Right of Way, or an existing access road), may act as natural breaks in your overall compartment making management easier. Please note, for smaller forests (or creation areas) you may only require a single compartment.
