Passive HDMI Cable: Most HDMI cables are passive. That means one end goes into a source and the other goes to a home theater receiver or video display, and the signal is transferred. The cable is also bi-directional, meaning you can connect either end to an HDMI input or output connection. Passive HDMI cables should be able to provide a stable signal for lengths of up 15 feet. Active and Optical HDMI cables are directional. This means one end is labeled source or 1 and the other end is labeled TV or 2. The cable must be connected in the proper direction to work. Belkin is also a trusted brand when it comes to cables, so you can rest assured that this cable will last a long time. If you want to keep hunting for the best deal, make sure the cable you're considering is either Premium Certified, says it can do 4K/60, or can handle 18Gbps bandwidth. And it's an added bonus if it has a great warranty like the Monoprice cables. READ NEXT: The best 1080p, 1440p, 4K and ultrawide monitors Does the physical construction of the cable matter? The good thing is, if it works, it works. For example, if you're sending a 4K HDR signal from your 4K Blu-ray player to your 4K HDR TV and the TV shows a 4K HDR signal, you're set. It's not possible to get a better image using a different 4K HDMI cable. That's not how the technology works. Standard HDMI Cable: These cables are designed for common HDTV broadcast, cable, and satellite TV resolutions(up to 720p and 1080i) with a bandwidth capacity of up to 5 Gbps. It is optimized for HDMI versions 1.0 to 1.2a.Even better, these cables offer HDMI 2.1 support, so you'll get the full suite of extra features, and the price isn't bad either, considering the unique design. There are several HDMI formats. But you really only need to keep your eye on a couple of them. The first pair to know are HDMI 1.4 and 1.4a. The two are basically indistinguishable at this point because any HDMI 1.4 product that’s not terribly old will be made to the 1.4a standard. The HDMI cable that you already have might support all the features you need. Here’s how to figure that out. If all you plan to do is watch TV and nothing further While HDMI 2.0 is actually about five years old, 2.0b is not yet three years old. The difference between these formats is actually quite simple. The newest version, 2.0b, carries double the bandwidth of the 2.0 format, reaching a maximum of 18Gbit/s. That higher bandwidth is necessary for 2.0b to support high dynamic range content. Flat Cable HDMI - 2.0 - High Speed HDMI Flat Wire, by Ultra Flat Cable HDMI - 2.0 - High Speed HDMI Flat Wire, by Ultra

If you’re buying a new cable now, we only recommend considering the last two. Right now, Premium High Speed HDMI can handle content in 4K at 60 frames per second, which covers almost anything you can throw at your TV. Ultra High Speed may be necessary for some PS5, Xbox Series X, and high-end PC graphics cards to output at their absolute best in some cases, but right now it is fairly rare. Meanwhile, 8K video only exists for research and tech demos. In other words, Ultra High exists mostly in anticipation of future hardware and content. There’s nothing wrong with future-proofing, but know that Ultra High Speed is overkill for most people. ARC and eARC Only want to watch Netflix shows (such as The Crown) in 4K and nothing more? If the HDMI cable you’re using now provides a steady picture, you’re all set. When should you buy a new HDMI cable for your 4K TV? Just connect your TV and media device using your existing cable. If you get a steady image with no artifacts, you’re good to go. No additional thinking is required. If you want to watch HDR content, play games at 60 or 120fps, use a TV as a monitor, etc.

Flat Hdmi Cables

Buy the right cable length. Don't buy a cable that's too long, and make sure the length isn't so short that you can't move the components enough to provide easy connection access. Active: An active HDMI cable has a small chip built into the cable that takes a little power from the device's HDMI connector and uses it to boost the HDMI signal. These cables cost a little extra, but are far more likely to work. A long passive cable might work for you, but it might not. It depends on your gear. Since they're not significantly more expensive, they're worth considering for any long run. As with pretty much any type of cable, shorter is better. With a longer HDMI cable, you’re more likely to experience some level of signal degradation. If you run an HDMI cable over 25 feet or more, you may notice issues like visual artifacts, dimming, and input lag. Keep in mind there's no such thing as HDMI cable "versions." As in, there's no such thing as an "HDMI 2.0" cable. The version numbers refer to the physical connections in your TV, receiver or sound bar. So your TV and 4K Blu-ray player need to both have HDMI 2.0 to watch HDR content, but the cable connecting them couldn't care less. It's just a dumb pipe. Not everybody needs 4K cables, 3D features, or nearly three dozen separate audio channels. HDMI 1.4 cables are still widely used, and are often a bit less expensive than their HDMI 2.0 counterparts.

When running HDMI cables through a room, you generally want to use a flat cable. They can slip under rugs, run smoothly along the edges of a doorway, and can become almost invisible once installed. They’re also the right choice for most in-wall installations. But when you know what to expect from your HDMI cable, finding the right one is simple. It’s usually a matter of considering the cable size, its general construction, and the specific HDMI format it uses.
