About this deal

Texts by Jeremy Deller; interview with Jeremy Deller by Daniel Scott, Alan Kane, Mary Beard, Jonny Banger, Cheerio.

This book is an enjoyable look back across 30 years worth of artworks by Jeremy Deller - from his playful inflatable Stonehenge to his poignant intervention where soldiers in World War I uniforms turned up at stations. Jeremy Deller won the Turner Prize in 2004, and represented Britain at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013. All artwork deliveries from The Modern Institute/Toby Webster Ltd require a signature and we accept no responsibility if the signature is not that of the recipient, or nominate recipient, and will consider the package correctly delivered. The text is brought to life by artwork from across Dell er’s oeuvre, including work which has never been seen before.Deller grew up in London and famously attended the elite private school Dulwich College at the same time as Nigel Farage, who makes a fleeting appearance in Putin’s Happy, revving up a union jack-waving anti-Brexit audience in Parliament Square. Growing up I played in brass bands and so feel a strong affinity with Deller describing the happiness he feels hanging around steel bands – a collaborative endeavour where everyone’s contributing by playing their part. data-background-images="{}" data-background-type="image" data-video-loop="true" data-video-play-only-visible="true" data-video-lazy-load="true" data-video-fallback-src="" data-element="inner" data-pb-style="G8XVEJQ">

The book features work from across Deller's life and art and includes Sacrilege, the inflatable Stonehenge, the Iggy Pop Life Class, The Battle of Orgreave, a recreation of a confrontation from the Miners' Strike, bats (a subject in at least three of Deller's works), Andy Warhol (whom he met in 1986), rave culture, hen harriers pecking out the eyes of a Tory MP, and a giant Chameleon slide. One minor thing I would challenge and disagree with him on would be his comment on Stonehenge being a national obsession in the UK, I cannot speak for Wales or N Ireland, but I can’t think of anyone who really gave a shit about it in Scotland?

Much has been written about Deller over the decades but this is the first time he has pulled together all of his cultural touchstones. It can be quite difficult in a way, but I think I managed to gracefully retire from pop culture a while back. Today the notion of the architect as the controlling auteur still dominates both the teaching and practising of architecture. Receiving no public funding, the RA depends on the continuing generosity of our supporters and Friends. The act of people coming together also ensures that every project builds up social capital that extends beyond its immediate time and place. He frequently explores work with a very broad range of aesthetics and appears non-judgemental about taste.
