The subject matter intrigued me as I had never heard of this woman Len Howard who had made a radical decision to leave her position as a violinist in London and move to remote spot in Sussex where she could devote her life to studying birds. The birds learned to trust her, would fly in and out of her house and even roost in her house in nesting boxes. There’s a warm welcome as you enter the light hallway with bathroom and bedroom doors opening off it and steps leading through the original timber door-frame into the lofty open plan living space. But as the book progressed, and the reasons for – and consequences of – her decision played out on the page, it became more interesting than I could have hoped.
