After signing with Rawkus Records, he and Talib Kweli released a full length album under the band name Black Star, entitled Black Star. Kweli raps the second and final verse of "Know That", while Busta goes back and forth with Mos on "Do It Now". In 1994, Mos also began his music career, forming the short-lived group Urban Thermo Dynamics (UTD) with his younger brother DCQ and his younger sister Ces.Black on Both Sides is the kind of album that you can easily listen from start to finish without skipping a song, as all the beats are great and the rapper's contribution is always good too. He launched his hip hop career in 1994, joining his siblings in the short-lived rap group Urban Thermo Dynamics and on albums by Da Bush Babees and De La Soul. The album features an emphasis on live instrumentation and socially conscious lyrics and has features from Q-Tip, Busta Rhymes and Talib Kweli.

The ending instrumental "May-December" is also probably one of the best instrumentals I've ever heard on a hip-hop album, the kind of song you put on replay without ever getting bored. On Mos Def's 2004 album The New Danger, the rapper took his penchant for experimentation to a new level. In September 2011, Mos Def announced that he planned to use the name Yasiin Bey instead of Mos Def beginning in 2012.
