and yet i feel like i have already inadvertently failed in this goal by reading this one, because i wouldn’t really classify it as “horror.

It felt more like a suspense novel a lot of the time but there were still some horrific moments that I won't go into here. That was a first for me in a horror novel and helped take this reading experience to a whole other level. I won’t lie, I bought this for the title and the cover, but I stayed for the excellent female friendships, and Mean Girls-esque drama. The high school melodrama and parents-just-don't-understand perspective can seem a bit farfetched at times, but for the most part feel familiar if you can still put yourself in a 16 year old mindset.Devilishly mean HS girls and cliques are elements that most of us can relate to and the “faith and fitness” show was classic. The 80s song title chapter headings were perfection and fitted the narrative of the chapters perfectly. For five years, Gretchen had been the perfect Albermarle student, and the faculty still saw what they were used to seeing - not what was really happening.

I signed up for an exorcism, but what I really got and loved most about this book was the friendship between Gretchen and Abby. It's set up as a flashback, which is fine, then the story occurs in 'real time' then it becomes the present again and a bunch of time skips, I just didn't think any of that was necessary, the main '80's' storyline more than holds its own. Four girls in high school are just trying to get by and on one strange night things get a little weird. I'd have preferred a different ending though with Halley's comet, if you've read it you'll know what I mean.It’s twenty years ago and she’s bombing over the old bridge in a crapped-out Volkswagen Rabbit, windows down, radio blasting UB40, the air sweet and salty in her face. Los personajes son muy fuertes, destacando sobre los demás las dos protas por excelencia, nuestras particulares heroínas que harán todo lo posible por salvar su amistad, ¿lo lograrán?
