Sylvia, who is extremely well-known to local historians, is a retired academic historian and a former Birkdale resident. He has now adapted the first book in the series himself for the Unicorn Theatre’s Christmas show and, if the result is not entirely clean, wholesome entertainment (it’s recommended for six-years-plus) – there are an awful lot of references to bottoms, for one thing – it marks a pretty jolly start to the festive season. The Bolds are just like you and me. They live in an ordinary house on an ordinary street, and they love to laugh. But there's one slight difference. They are actually hyenas! As the play begins, we’re introduced to a family of four laughing hyenas who come upon the bony leavings of the Bolds, an unfortunate English couple eaten by crocodiles while on safari in Tanzania. Mummy and Daddy hyena, fed up with foraging for food in the tropics, and hoping for a better life for their two offspring, decide to chance life in England. Like all good Christmas shows a few of the lines are subtly for the adults rather than the kids. Sam Pay as the marvellously miserable Mr McNumpty and John Trenchard as adorable Uncle Tony do a great job of keeping a straight face when delivering a few naughty, under-the-radar references; but it’s all done in the best possible taste.It’s all very jolly but the energy eventually lags. Running at two hours, Clary’s script is far too long and a bit shapeless. The songs, penned by Clary and Simon Wallace, are written in an unforgivingly low register and don’t feel entirely necessary – but are just about rescued by a delightfully daft duet in the closing stages, infused with a music-hall sense of mischief. There is also the typical trope of old, grumpy, bleh, dude next door. I really don't like that trope, it was the one thing that I didn't like throughout the book. Only at the ending (with the revelation) did I start to like him a bit. I still didn't like that he acted the way he did. I found it rude, bad, and I just wanted him out of the story. What a fun premise! And what a disappointment. The story arc didn't quite feel finished, and there were all sorts of opportunities built right into the plot for the author to heighten the stakes but Clary just let them slip through his fingers. So much could have gone wrong with the kidnapping! So much could have gone wrong with their disguises! So much could have gone wrong on "Grandpa's" walks! But nothing ever did. The wildlife refuge rescue wasn't dangerous enough to be the main conflict of the book. It's like the whole book was a lead up to a story that never happened.

I've had lots of requests for this since mentioning it to library customers, and my book group (ages 7-10) think it's a winner. I'm included to agree. This is an upbeat, heartwarming book that is bound to be popular with children and adults alike. Furthermore, the book is an absolute must if you are a David Roberts fan with its very generous proportion of illustrations to delight young readers. I’m actually hoping they will produce a picture book spin off about Miranda the marmoset who is the cutest creature I have ever seen! All in all these histories have covered many aspects of the immediate communities in and around Southport.

The full cast is David Ahmad as Fred Bold, Amanda Gordon as Amelia Bold, Sam Swann as Bobby Bold and Mae Munuo as Betty Bold, Sam Pay as Mr McNumpty, Charity Bedu-Addo as Minnie and Jon Trenchard as Uncle Tony. Things become more precarious for the human pretending hyenas following a visit to a safari park where they meet Uncle Tony, an ageing hyena who’s destined for extermination by the other hyenas in the animal park. Not to mention the threat posed by the irrepressible antics of Betty and Bobby who’ve already exposed their secret hyena identities by unwittingly exposing their tails to schoolmate, Minnie (Charity Bedu-Addo).

The volume I speak of is entitled Southport’s Landowning Families – four local manorial families by four well-known and highly-respected historians, Sylvia Harrop, Pat Perrins, Roger Hull and, the late, great, Dr. Harry Foster. The dialogue is fun and irreverent, and Julian pokes lots of fun at the ridiculousness of modern life as The Bolds adjust to Teddington society. There’s toilet humour aplenty, and generous dollops of one liners. Yet throughout this silliness we develop a fondness and sympathy for these furry imposters. We are most indignant at the way their frosty neighbour Mr McNumpty treats them. And you just know that the trip to the local safari park will be memorably eventful! How long can they keep their beastly secret under their hats? Join Mr and Mrs Bold and their twins Betty and Bobby as they navigate work, school and friends whilst trying to keep up their disguise. After his retirement he became a prolific local history author writing many of the BAHRS’s wonderful publications.Having expressed the above reservations, let it be said the children attending The Bolds– all wearing animal-like headbands, ie complimentary soft-toy animal ears of lions, tigers, elephants and giraffes, readily shouted to the actors when asked to participate and laughed uproariously in all the key places.
