Many dash cams on the market are beginning to boast 4K resolution, but as is always the case with cameras, the resolution doesn't tell the whole story. While the AUTO-VOX V5 is limited to 1080p resolution, it uses a Sony sensor with F/1.8 aperture for both the front and rear cameras, meaning the quality of the video is decent at the source.

Guiding Tech 4 Best Mirror Dash Cams for Cars - Guiding Tech

Looking in through the factory tinted window, you can barely see the camera. It is pretty small and unobtrusive. Take a look at thevillages.com for info on where we live. There are actually lots of UK folks with homes here! Since the camera is always on, I was worried it would not work well at night with headlights behind me. I was wrong. It was amazing at night. No Delay Stream Media Mirror Dash Cam: The Stream media technology transmits full 1080P footage without delay, recording the license plate and all crashes clearly. 9.35-inch full screen improves roughly four times greater field of vision than a traditional rearview mirror. Improve your driving experience.Fortunately, this isn't the case. The finish of the display is mirrored, so it functions as a rear-view mirror when the car is off. This has the slightly unfortunate side effect of making it difficult to photograph, but fortunately, when you're actually using it, the display is easy to see. The rear camera comes with a sweet bonus feature. It sports blue light resistant glass, as well as a top-quality Sony sensor. Under daytime conditions, you won’t really notice a difference. However, if the person behind you is using bright blue halogen headlights or high beams, you’ll still see just fine. Even if you get rear-ended at night, you’ll be able to read the other person’s license plate. This is a simple and cheap solution which can obtain its power via the cigarette lighter and then needs only one cable to be run to the camera, which clips over the license place. Despite the modest price, the screen can be used in normal and mirrored modes with optional reversing guides and the camera even has ‘Super Night Vision’. You cannot turn the camera OFF. If the camera gets dirty or malfunctions, there is no option to turn the camera off and use it like a regular mirror. There is an option for “Drivers Mode”. This turns the camera off, but it puts two large icons on the screen. One for direction and another for speed. That makes it not good for a regular mirror. Along the bottom edge, there is a power button. You can choose to turn off the mirror and use it as a traditional mirror.

Fitting a reversing camera can be a daunting task if you’re not a motor enthusiast, but there is an unsurmountable need for power (the screen and the camera) and a connection between the two. The Auto-Vox Solar 1 takes advantage of wireless to transmit the video from the camera, and a solar panel to power it. The display screen is easy to read under any conditions. It has a glare-resistant finish that prevents your image from being obscured by sun glare or someone’s headlights. In addition, the finish is also laminated. This means that there’s no air gap between the touchscreen glass and the substrate. With an air gap, the spot you touch isn’t always the spot that registers. Moreover, an air gap can also cause additional glare. With a laminated screen, you avoid both of these issues. The simplest way to attach the rear camera is by mounting it on your license plate, then feeding the wire through to the interior of your vehicle. Then route it along to the front of the vehicle where it plugs into the main unit. As with the front camera, hiding the wiring is the more difficult part of this. In the 2nd pic you can see a plug still connected. That's for the rain sensor. The wire dangling down is the plug for the mirror sensor which is for auto dip main beam I believe which I could live without or maybe I could retrofit to the V5 pro? Not sure.Yada actually provides a good range of choices when it comes to monitors, from 2.4-inch options for suction mounting through 3.5 and 4.3 all the way up to this 5-inch. That goes to emphasize the fact that, while the size is important, it’s more to do with the space in your vehicle than the viewing experience. If you have a big-ish family car, 5 inches (plus bezel) won’t obscure too much of your forward view so it’s a good choice. To install, the camera is connected to the reversing light for power and the video and a control lead which tells the system when reverse is engaged to it takes over the display. The camera is IP69 waterproof, and can survive a carwash, while the view has been improved over its predecessor. There are numerous options ranging from what to display to when to record. These are all easily accessible by pressing the options icon at the bottom of the on-screen display. Since the dashcam screen also functions as a mirror, unwanted reflections from the interior of the car are unavoidable when using the LCD. You can tilt the dashcam to minimize them, but there is no tilt angle that avoids all reflections when sunlight is streaming through your car windows. All dashcam/mirrors will have this problem. To eliminate reflections completely, you need to apply an anti-glare screen on top of the LCD. You can cut anti-glare film to fit and apply it to the LCD, but then you cannot use the dashcam screen as a mirror. Instead, I cut a piece of rigid anti-glare plastic and attached it with tape at the top, and magnets on the bottom to hold it in place (see attached pictures). Keep in mind that when there are water droplets on the lens in wet weather the camera image is often useless, so in wet weather it’s best to use the dashcam as a mirror.

V5 Pro - AUTO-VOX

I didn’t see these problems with the X2 in this car. This is probably because the X2 used a lithium battery as an internal power source while the new V5 uses a supercapacitor. The internal power source provides enough power to save the last video recording properly when the dashcam switches off. Otherwise, the file would be corrupted and unreadable. The lithium battery in the X2 was more powerful than the supercapacitor. It could power the entire dashcam, including the LCD. The supercapacitor in the V5 only has enough power to take care of the recording system and does not power the LCD.For the comfort dash, I routed the cable just under the passenger side footwell cover which is very easy to remove. Went up the A piller from there. I removed the ceiling panels to access the main rear wire bundle which runs down the passenger side and ran the rear camera cable alongside this. The hardest part of the install is getting the rear light cable through the rubber tailgate cable access. A long wire feed rod was very helpful. I then drilled a small hole in the top of the inside of the tailgate to pull the cable through. Again the wire feed rod was invaluable here. One install note regarding my vehicle, I have a Nissan Leaf - 2023, and finding a constant source of power was super easy, I just went straight to the battery, the switched and/or ACC power took a few tries as some of the sources stay powered after the vehicle is turned off and you exit, I found this to be true especially when my vehicle was plugged in and charging. In the end, I was able to find a source that turned off when the power button was turned off.

The one thing you might want but won't get with the AUTO-VOX V5 is 4K video. For most people, this won't be a deal-breaker, but if you're recording your travels for uses other than insurance purposes, you might want something that records higher quality video.Installing the rear camera can be a much more involved process than the front camera. But if you're not sure you want to get tied up in this process, it's also completely optional. You can always start with the front camera to get used to it and then add the rear camera later on. The mirror records clips of 1, 3, or 5 minutes in a loop, up to the capacity of the card. Once full, it will begin overwriting starting with the oldest clip. One really nice feature is how the files are stored. All front videos are stored in a folder called “F” and rear videos in a folder called “R”. Both front and read clips start simultaneously and have sequential names like FILE200809-214241-000035F.MOV. The name contains the date (minus the century “20” of “2020”) and time of the recording (in military time), a sequence number, and “F” or “R”, depending on which camera took the video. If you choose the same sequence numbers from both cameras, you can combine them into one video with your own editing software. Garmin also offer a battery wireless camera which can be attached to the top of a license plate, the Garmin BC40, but the BC35 comes with a good length power cable (15ft/4.5m) but a slightly random selection of other cables with the fuse flimsily mounted in the lead.
